Abstract

The article aims to deconstruct the memory of some Brazilian military and politicians regarding the naval dimension (or lack thereof) of the Falklands War. Supported by documents from the United States, United Kingdom, and Argentina made public ten years ago, but still little explored by Brazilian academia, the article examines the role of the Argentine Navy in the Falklands War. It reveals two main conclusions that advance historical knowledge about this war. First, the Argentine Navy was primarily responsible for escalating the crisis into an open conflict. Its commander, Isaac Anaya, conspired and acted independently, breaking the Junta's command unity by authorizing covert operations without consulting his peers or adequately planning and preparing. Secondly, he abandoned the original plan to demonstrate force and refused to establish an adequate coastal defense with sufficient forces to compel the British to surrender the islands or negotiate. With this, the Falklands War offers an important historical lesson about the incompatibility between military effectiveness and politicization on the part of a navy.
